Azure IoT and HoloLens Pilot: Sensor Readings in Mixed Reality at a Logistics Site
A HoloLens pilot on Azure that showed humidity and temperature readings from facility sensors to people walking through a logistics site.

DomainIndustrial IoT, mixed reality (HoloLens)
Context
A logistics enterprise stored goods that required different climate regimes in different parts of its facility. Humidity and temperature had to be watched zone by zone.
My role
I was project manager and product owner of the pilot, which ran at the real site.
What we built
- A HoloLens application. Built in Unity: walking through the facility, the user sees in the headset the humidity and temperature readings from sensors in different locations.
- An Azure back end. Azure IoT Hub, Azure Digital Twins, Azure Spatial Anchors and Blob and Table Storage.
- Split of work. The plant's representatives installed the sensors; our team integrated them into the system.
Result
The pilot was judged successful. It did not grow beyond the pilot for business reasons, not technical ones: the client considered HoloLens too expensive and fragile for everyday use, and had no budget for a follow-up pilot on other devices.
